Moving Cows in Space: Exploiting Proprioception as a Framework for Virtual Environment Interaction

چکیده
Manipulation in immersive virtual environments is difficult partly because we humans must do without the haptic contact with real objects we rely on in the real world to orient ourselves and our manipulanda. To compensate for this lack, we propose exploiting the real objects one does have in a virtual environment, one's own body parts. We present a unified framework for virtual-environment interaction based on proprioception, a person's sense of the position and orientation of his body and limbs. We describe a taxonomy of three forms of body-relative interaction: • Direct manipulation ways to use body sense to help control manipulation • Physical mnemonics ways to store/recall information relative to the body • Gestural actions ways to use body-relative actions to issue commands and recall abstractions Automatic scaling is a way to instantly bring objects within reach so that users can manipulate them using proprioceptive cues. Several novel virtual interaction techniques based upon automatic scaling and our proposed framework of proprioception allow a user to intuitively, efficiently, precisely, and lazily interact with a virtual world. Finally we describe the integration of these techniques into a real-world system: the Chapel Hill Immersive Modeling Program . CR

متن کاملUsing proprioception as a cue towards effective spatial input in VR : a framework for an experimental study
We developed a free form deformation application for an immersive environment in which users can interact freely by using datagloves. In this paper, we present an experimental protocol designed to investigate the contribution of proprioception and bimanual interaction on spatial input tasks in the context of our modeling application.
متن کاملVirtual Space as a Platform for Student Research Practices
Online learning is becoming an increasingly popular request. Many universities are moving fully or partially to this form of study. In the article, the authors considered what is virtual space, what are its criteria, as well as applicability for teaching students and passing research practices. Based on an analysis of existing virtual spaces (platforms), an experiment was conducted. The study s...
متن کاملUsing the Adaptive Frequency Nonlinear Oscillator for Earning an Energy Efficient Motion Pattern in a Leg- Like Stretchable Pendulum by Exploiting the Resonant Mode
In this paper we investigate a biological framework to generate and adapt a motion pattern so that can be energy efficient. In fact, the motion pattern in legged animals and human emerges among interaction between a central pattern generator neural network called CPG and the musculoskeletal system. Here, we model this neuro - musculoskeletal system by means of a leg - like mechanical system cal...
متن کاملA Reflection on Shaping the Virtual Space Based on Religious Values
This paper initially examines theories proposed by Feenberg abouttechnical systems and alternative modernity, analyzes his thoughts, andconcludes that a framework of values needs to be provided in shapingtechnical systems. In a society like Iran, where policy makers are looking forthe realization of Islamic values, this framework of values is derived fromIslam. To explain the relationship betwe...
